Passenger travel from the United Kingdom prohibited for 24 hours

All passenger travel (by air, by rail and by sea) from the United Kingdom to Belgium is prohibited on Monday, December 21, 2020. This applies both to passengers with Belgium as their final destination as well as to passengers in transit through our country. This emergency measure will come into effect at midnight for a period of 24 hours. However, freight transport remains possible.

On December 19, 2020, the British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that an accelerated spreading of the coronavirus had been observed in the United Kingdom. This accelerated spreading would be due to a new variant of the COVID-19 virus. There is no evidence at this time that this variant is more lethal, nor that it causes worse symptoms, but it is believed to spread faster.

For the above reason, the government is taking additional temporary emergency measures pursuant to the precautionary principle. The goal is to keep this variant of the COVID-19 virus outside our national borders.

Belgians or residents of Belgium who are at risk of being stuck in the United Kingdom as a result of this measure, can contact the Belgian embassy in London or the Federal Public Service Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation for support.

The government is closely monitoring the evolution of the epidemiological situation and is in close contact with neighbouring countries and the institutions of the European Union.
