Let's protect eachother against respiratory infections.

Trends are moving in the right direction: possibility to broaden social contacts but remain cautious

Evolution of daily average values

Last week*, 82 new infections were reported per day on average. This means a decrease by 13% in comparison to the previous week (94 new infections per day on average). Over the same period, the average number of deaths per day has also decreased from 7 to 4 (-38%). The number of new hospital admissions for COVID-19 has diminished over the past week** to an average of 13 per day, compared to 15 per day one week earlier (-15%).

  • 23 June -29 June. The data on new infections and deaths for the past 3 days is not consolidated

** 16 June-22 June.

Evolution of the occupation rate in hospitals

Last week, the occupation rate in hospitals decreased:

  • On 2 July, 183 hospital beds were occupied by COVID19-patients. On 25 June, that number was still 255, which means a decrease by 29%.
  • Over the same period, the number of beds occupied in intensive care has also diminished from 38 to 35 (-8%).

Evolution of short-term indicators

ABSENCE FROM WORK

Through Medex, Sciensano receives an overview of the number of ill people among the 83,000 Belgian civil servants compared to previous years. With those indicators, we can deduce whether more people are getting ill. It gives us an idea of the impact of the coronavirus on the working population.

The number of absentees has remained stable over the past weeks and lower than in previous years.

EVOLUTION OF CONSULTATIONS FOR INFLUENZA-LIKE SYMPTOMS

In the past week, 59 inhabitants out of 100,000 consulted their general practitioner for flu-like symptoms, such as fever and cough (same symptoms as those of COVID19). The number of consultations remained stable in all age categories.

Adapted reporting

As of this week, Sciensano will no longer publish detailed weekly epidemiological reports on Fridays. As the trends of the epidemic seem to be stabilizing at many levels, we will replace the weekly Friday reports with thematic reports that will be published regularly, but not always on Fridays, as an annex to the daily reports. When new information becomes available on a particular topic or when there is a significant change in a trend, such as consultations for influenza symptoms, absenteeism from work, the presence of antibodies in health care workers or changes in patient profiles, we will prepare a thematic annex with the most recent data.

We also insist that Sciensano continues to monitor the situation of the virus in our country very closely. This change in reporting does not change this.

Safely extended social contacts for this 4th phase

Since 1 July 2020, the fourth phase of the deconfinement plan allows a further expansion of social contacts.

Citizens are now free to move around the Belgian territory. However, the authorities are still calling on their sense of responsibility and solidarity to ensure that they comply with all health recommendations. Private and public activities of a cultural, social, sporting, tourist and recreational nature have almost all resumed, but with precautionary measures, which are the subject of specific protocols.

On a more personal basis, each person can meet, in addition to the people living under his or her roof, up to 15 different people per week. This is an individual right and the 15 people can change each week.

Group meetings are also limited to a maximum of 15 people (including children). This applies to all meetings, whether they take place at home or outside the home (for example in a bar, café, park, …).

Gatherings of more than 15 people remain prohibited at least until 31 August 2020, except for the exceptions listed on the website info-coronavirus.be: https://www.info-coronavirus.be/fr/faq/.
