Analysis on the excess mortality due to Covid-19

This morning, the group of experts presented a graph that sheds additional light on the excess mortality figures due to Covid-19.

This graph compares our country’s mortality rate in recent weeks with the mortality rate at the same time over the last five years. The orange line shows the excess all-cause mortality figures. It is clear that these figures were above average shortly after mid-March: a significant part of the excess mortality is therefore Covid-19 related.

The green line shows the reported number of deaths due to Covid-19, both confirmed and suspected. The green dotted line shows only confirmed cases.

This graph confirms that Belgium is reporting the figures correctly: our country is one of the only ones to take into account non-confirmed cases. This allows us to assess the current situation more accurately and to respond by taking the right steps together to fight this situation.
