Decline in infections in most provinces

1. Trends

The development of the epidemic is monitored by using a 7-day average and in comparison to the infection events of the previous week. This method enables us to clearly show the respective trends, regardless of the fluctuations in the daily figures.

Last week, an average of 528 new cases per day have been diagnosed in Belgium. This is a decrease of 15% compared to the previous week. It is the third day in a row we have observed a decrease. This confirms that we have entered a favourable downward trend, at least at national level.

As in the previous days, the situation in Antwerp continues to develop positively. Last week, we saw an average of 135 new cases per day, a 34% decrease compared to the previous week.

During the same period, 118 new cases per day were reported in the Brussels-Capital Region. This is still an increase compared to the previous week. At present, the increase is +21%, compared to +50% a few days ago.

In the other provinces we are now seeing a decline everywhere, with the exception of Flemish Brabant, where the weekly averages continue to rise slightly for the time being.

There has also been a slight decline in hospital admissions last week: Two weeks ago there was an average of 33 new hospital admissions per day, whereas last week there were only 30. Most new admissions are still in Brussels and Antwerp, followed by Liège, East Flanders and West Flanders.

In the past week, about 10 people with COVID-19 died every day, which is more than double the number compared to the previous week, when an average of 4 people died of COVID-19 every day. This strong increase is related to the peak at the beginning of last week. The coming days will show whether the mortality rate will fall back to a lower level and whether this increase was indeed a temporary peak related to the heat wave.

CURRENT LOCAL INFECTION SITUATION

To track the infection at a local level, visit our website, which shows the situation in each municipality. It contains data on the incidence of the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 per municipality based on 3 indicators:

  • 7-day cumulative incidence (number of new infections in the last 7 days divided by the population of the specific municipality, multiplied by 100,000);
  • Number of consecutive days on which at least one new infection was reported;
  • Number of days on which there is an increase in new infections compared to the previous day, over a period of 7 days.

2. Daily figures

The daily figures are available online via the Sciensano COVID-19 dashboard.

The corresponding Open Data records can be downloaded from our website.

Dashboard and datasets are updated daily at 09.00 am.

The number of new infections is also updated at the weekend. The two longer-term indicators, hospital admissions and deaths, are only updated during the week.
