On 7 March, 422 samples were analysed by the network of the KULeuven reference hospital. 31 samples tested positive for Covid-19 virus (16 in Flanders, 8 in Brussels and 7 in Wallonia).
Since the beginning of the epidemic, 200 cases of Covid-19 infections have been detected in Belgium.
There are several reasons for this slight decrease in positive cases. It is possible that the return of travellers from northern Italy is coming to an end. In addition, priority for testing is currently given to samples of people whose symptoms could lead to hospital admission and to health professionals. This prioritisation is due to the global problem of delivery of reagents, which are required to carry out analyses. Finally, during weekends, the laboratory always notes a decrease in the number of samples submitted.
Covid-19 is currently starting to circulate among the Belgian population, but it remains limited. Since people returning from Italy reside all over Belgium, this local circulation is observed in different parts of the country.
