On Tuesday 5 May, 272 new cases were reported. Of these, 199 live in Flanders, 62 in Wallonia and 10 in Brussels. We have no information on the residence of the other 1 case. This brings the total number of confirmed infected people to 50 781. The rest of the situation is as follows:
The total number of people admitted to hospital with coronavirus symptoms now stands at 2 849. There have been 116 new hospital admissions in the last 24 hours.
There are a total of 646 patients in intensive care, which is the same number as the day before.
12 731 have been discharged from hospital and declared cured since 15 March, which is an increase of 290 in the past 24 hours.
A total of 8 339 deaths were reported, which is an increase of 110 in the past 24 hours. In addition, 229 additional hospital deaths reported between 24 March and 4 May were added retroactively. With regard to these 111 deaths, 280 died in hospital and 59 in a residential care centre. In the latter group, 78% were confirmed by a COVID test.
Of the total of 8 339 people, 48% died in hospital, 51% in a residential care centre, 0.3% at home and 0.4% elsewhere. The hospital deaths are all confirmed cases. The deaths in residential care centres were both confirmed (19%) and suspected (81%) cases.
The number of people confirmed infected in Belgium is still increasing. The number of new hospital admissions is gradually decreasing, but remains fairly high. So please persevere and follow the general measures, take good care of yourself and of others.
